NIST researchers have developed a portable optical lattice clock that achieves unprecedented precision, measuring time with 18 digits of accuracy. This portable clock can be used for various applications, including geodesy measurements, testing general relativity, and redefining the SI second.
The portable clock is equipped with new technologies and quantum tools to enhance its performance and stability. It will first be deployed for next-generation geodesy measurements and optical clock comparisons to redefine the second. The research team has published several papers detailing the development and characterization of the portable clock, including its ability to operate through turbulent air and achieve high-precision frequency ratio measurements.
