NIST physicist David J. Wineland has been awarded the 2007 National Medal of Science for his pioneering work in laser cooling and manipulation of ions. Wineland’s research has led to breakthroughs in extremely precise measurements and standards, quantum computing, and fundamental tests of quantum mechanics. His work has been instrumental in developing new forms of computation and has helped train new generations of scientists. Wineland is internationally recognized for his development of laser cooling techniques and has received numerous awards throughout his career.
