Tobias Herman is a physicist at NIST’s Sensor Science Division, working in the Thermodynamic Metrology Group. His primary responsibilities include maintaining and disseminating the International Temperature Scale of 1990 and operating the NIST Hybrid Humidity Generator, the institute’s primary humidity standard.
Herman’s research background spans physical chemistry and condensed matter physics, with a focus on the effects of disorder on phase transitions and dynamic heterogeneity in supercooled liquids near the glass transition. He joined NIST in 2010 and moved to the Thermodynamic Metrology group in 2016.
Currently, Herman is exploring the potential of chip and fiber-based photonic temperature sensors for future temperature metrology applications, including sensor development and performance benchmarking.
