Key Asia-Pacific Officials, Experts Discuss Critical Importance of Standards Education | NIST

Key Asia-Pacific officials and experts gathered in Washington, D.C. to discuss the critical importance of standards education. The meeting, attended by over 100 leaders from government agencies, industry, and universities, focused on strategies for more effective standards education in the Asia-Pacific region.

The event highlighted the broad importance of standards education, not just for engineers and scientists, but also for business, legal, and public policy students. This aligns with the emphasis on education in standardization first noted in the 2006 APEC Ministerial Meeting Joint Statement, which stressed the importance of standards in promoting free trade and economic cooperation among member economies.

Keynote addresses were delivered by S. Joe Bhatia, president and CEO of ANSI, and Patrick Gallagher, Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Both emphasized the critical role that standards play in today’s global economy and the need for a more unified and effective standards education system in the Asia-Pacific region.
