Researchers at NIST have developed a theoretical method to create secure, single-use computer memories using quantum physics. The one-shot memory devices could be used for secure transactions like electronic money transfers. The key innovation is encoding two secret messages into the same quantum system, so only one can be retrieved. Quantum entanglement poses a risk, but the researchers have shown mathematically that if an adversary cannot create or use entanglement, they cannot retrieve both messages. The technology is still in early research stages, but could lead to more secure hardware-based security solutions in the future.
