The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking public input to develop new cryptographic standards that will be resistant to quantum computers. The deadline for submitting proposals is November 30, 2017. NIST is particularly interested in new algorithms for public key cryptography, which is currently vulnerable to quantum computer attacks.
NIST plans to spend the next few years gathering, testing, and recommending new algorithms that would be less susceptible to quantum computer attacks. The evaluation phase is expected to take three to five years. The goal is to have multiple post-quantum algorithms that can replace the current standards that are vulnerable to quantum computers.
