Two NIST researchers, Till Rosenband and Joshua Bienfang, have been nominated for prestigious Service to America medals. Rosenband is a finalist for the “Call to Service Medal” for inventing the world’s most precise timekeeping device, an experimental atomic clock based on quantum computing research. The new clock is 30 times more precise than current standards and would only lose or gain one second in three billion years.
Bienfang is a finalist for the Science and Environment Medal for his work using quantum physics and telecommunications technologies to demonstrate record-breaking encryption services. His system, based on the properties of quantum objects like photons, provides unprecedented security through quantum encryption.
The Service to America Medals, presented by the Partnership for Public Service, celebrate excellence in federal civil service.
