The University of Maryland (UMD) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have established a new Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science (QuICS) to advance basic research in quantum information science. The center will bring together computer scientists, quantum information scientists, and communications scientists to explore how quantum systems can be used for information processing and storage.
QuICS will build on the success of the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI), which was established in 2006. The new center will focus on understanding the intersection of quantum mechanics and computation, and how insights from computer science can inform quantum computing and communication theories. It will also investigate practical applications for theoretical advances in quantum information science.
The center will be located on the UMD campus in College Park, Maryland, and is expected to train scientists for future industrial and academic opportunities. QuICS will become an international center for excellence in quantum computer and information science, combining the strengths of UMD and NIST.
