Title: NIST Scientist Wins Colleagues’ Choice Award for Open-Source Control Electronics
Dr. David Leibrandt, a scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), has been recognized with the 2016 Colleagues’ Choice Award for his work on developing and sharing open-source hardware and software designs for advanced digital feedback controllers. These controllers, implemented on field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), have been published in scientific literature and are freely available online, enabling the modernization and simplification of aging control electronics across multiple NIST laboratories.
Despite not being his primary job responsibility, Dr. Leibrandt has successfully helped hundreds of technical practitioners within and outside NIST adopt these controllers. His efforts demonstrate a commitment to sharing knowledge and resources to advance scientific research and technological development.
