NIST scientists have conducted experiments demonstrating the effects of time dilation predicted by Einstein’s theory of relativity. By comparing two of the world’s most precise atomic clocks, one raised by a foot and another moved at car speeds, they observed that time passes faster at higher elevations and slower when moving faster. These effects are too small to be noticed by humans but could have practical applications in geophysics and other fields. The experiments confirm two predictions of Einstein’s theories – that time runs faster at lower gravity and slower when moving faster.
