NSF Physics Frontier Center Created at Joint Quantum Institute | NIST

The National Science Foundation has awarded the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI) a $12.5 million grant over five years to establish a Physics Frontier Center (PFC) at the University of Maryland (UMD). The JQI, a collaboration between NIST and UMD, will focus on researching coherence and entanglement – two key aspects of quantum information physics.

The PFC will be co-directed by JQI Fellows Bill Phillips of NIST and Luis Orozco of UMD, with support from a research council including other JQI fellows. The center aims to make significant contributions to quantum information science and beyond, while also enhancing education, diversity, and public outreach.

The NSF PFC selection criteria emphasize the potential for profound advances in physics, creative educational activities, and broader societal impacts. The JQI PFC is well-positioned to meet these requirements through its focus on cutting-edge quantum research and its commitment to broader impacts.
