The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) have established a joint technical committee, IEC/ISO JTC 3: Quantum Technologies, to develop standards for emerging quantum technologies. This committee focuses on standardizing symbols and representations for quantum computing components, particularly superconductors and Josephson junctions, which are essential elements in quantum bits (qubits).
The IEC 60617 standard, which includes graphical symbols for electrical and electronic diagrams, has been updated to include symbols for superconducting regions, normal-superconducting boundaries, and Josephson junctions. These standardized symbols will help facilitate the development and implementation of quantum technologies by providing a common language for circuit diagrams and technical documentation.
The establishment of IEC/ISO JTC 3: Quantum Technologies and the inclusion of quantum-related symbols in IEC 60617 demonstrate the growing importance of quantum technologies and the need for standardized representations to support their development and integration into existing systems.
