NIST Team Wins Bronze Medal for Quantum Measurement Work
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has awarded its 2023 Bronze Medal to a team led by Martin Stevens, Ralph Jimenez, Charles H. Camp Jr., and Thomas Gerrits. The researchers were recognized for their meticulous measurements of two-photon absorption by molecules using entangled photon pairs.
The NIST team’s work was crucial in refuting previously published claims of revolutionary measurement capabilities using quantum-entangled photons. By carefully documenting their techniques and publishing their results, the researchers prevented other government agencies from investing millions of dollars in building entangled-photon-pair microscopes based on flawed designs. This highlights the importance of verifying scientific claims, particularly in quantum mechanics, to avoid unnecessary research and development expenditures.
