Spotlight: New Ion Trap With Single-Photon Detector | NIST

NIST researchers have developed a compact ion trap with an integrated single-photon detector, which could significantly advance quantum computing technology. The bow-tie shaped trap measures 8mm long and 2mm wide in the middle, and uses lasers to manipulate the quantum states of ions. The built-in photon detector allows for precise measurement of ion states with over 99.9% accuracy, eliminating the need for separate imaging lenses and cameras. This technology could enable the construction of large-scale quantum processors by keeping track of multiple ions simultaneously. The research is published in the APS Physics journal.
