2024 Coblentz Award Recipient – Dr. David A. Long | NIST

Dr. David A. Long has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Coblentz Award by the Society for Applied Spectroscopy. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding young molecular spectroscopists under the age of 40. Dr. Long is a project leader in the Photonics and Optomechanics group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

His research focuses on developing and applying ultrasensitive spectroscopic methods to address problems in remote sensing, atmospheric chemistry, optomechanics, and quantum science. A particular area of interest is electro-optic frequency combs, which he has applied to physical metrology, ultrafast dynamics, and atomic sensing. Dr. Long has also transitioned these approaches to chip-scale, integrated photonic platforms and demonstrated spectral translation throughout the visible and mid-infrared range using optical parametric oscillation.

Dr. Long’s work has been recognized with several awards, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship, the Department of Commerce Silver Medal, the Sigma Xi Young Scientist Award, the National Defense Science and Engineering Fellowship, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, and the Morris K. Udall Scholarship.
