The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is working on standards for quantum-safe cryptography to protect against future quantum computing threats. Current public-key cryptography methods like RSA and ECC will be easily broken by quantum computers, putting all transmitted information at risk.
ETSI’s Cyber Quantum Safe Cryptography (QSC) Working Group is assessing and recommending quantum-safe cryptographic primitives, protocols, and implementation considerations. Their focus is on practical implementation, including performance, capabilities, protocols, and architectural considerations for specific applications.
The group is not developing cryptographic primitives themselves, but rather evaluating their security properties and practical considerations like extensible security architectures and technology switching costs. ETSI has published a technical report (TR 103 619) defining migration strategies and recommendations for quantum-safe schemes to help businesses prepare their digital systems for the quantum computing era.
