Laurie E. Locascio was sworn in as the 17th director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on April 7, 2022. As NIST director, Locascio will lead the agency’s research and standards development activities in areas such as cybersecurity, manufacturing, healthcare, greenhouse gas measurement, and quantum computing.
Locascio brings extensive experience in research, technology commercialization, and strategic partnerships to her new role. She most recently served as vice president for research at the University of Maryland College Park and Baltimore, where she focused on developing interdisciplinary research programs and fostering innovation and economic development.
As NIST director, Locascio will guide the agency’s collaborative efforts with industry, academia, and other government agencies to develop and apply the technology, measurements, and standards needed for innovative products and services. She will also oversee NIST’s work on investigations into the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside, Florida, and the impacts of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico.
Locascio’s previous honors and awards include induction as a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, the American Chemical Society Earle B. Barnes Award for Leadership in Chemical Research Management, and the Washington Academy of Sciences Special Award in Scientific Leadership.
