ETSI – ETSI Security Week paves the way for cybersecurity standards

ETSI, a major standards organization for information and communication technologies, held its Security Week in June 2015 to focus on cybersecurity and related standards. The event brought together experts from various sectors, including industry, government, and academia, to discuss security challenges in areas like the Internet of Things, Intelligent Transport Systems, and electronic identification. ETSI emphasized the importance of “security by design” in standards development and highlighted its ongoing work through the TC CYBER committee, which addresses cybersecurity issues and coordinates efforts across ETSI.

One key topic discussed was the potential threat of quantum computing to current encryption methods. ETSI published a white paper titled “Quantum Safe Cryptography and Security,” which outlines how quantum computing could break today’s encryption techniques. In response, ETSI is working on standards for quantum-safe cryptography and Quantum Key Distribution through two industry specification groups. These efforts aim to ensure that future communication systems remain secure even as quantum technology advances. The event also featured technical reports and presentations that are publicly available online.
