Thirteen employees of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) were recognized with awards during a ceremony on December 5, 2007. These awards, presented by NIST Acting Director James Turner and Acting Deputy Director Richard Kayser, honored individuals for their outstanding contributions to science, engineering, and support services. Five staff members received the highest honor, the NIST Bronze Medal, for significant achievements in areas such as nanotechnology, fire safety systems, and international time synchronization.
Other awards recognized excellence in measurement science, scientific writing, applied research, and workplace inclusivity. Notable recipients included Igor Vayshenker for his work in optical fiber power measurement standards, John Kitching for leadership in chip-scale atomic devices, and Kent D. Irwin for his contributions to superconducting quantum sensors. The ceremony also highlighted efforts to foster diversity and mentorship within NIST, with Arno Laesecke receiving an award for his mentorship of students and young staff.
