NIST has introduced a new time widget that allows website owners to display highly accurate time on their web pages. The widget connects to NIST’s atomic clock in Boulder, Colorado, syncing every 10 minutes to ensure precise timekeeping. It automatically detects the viewer’s time zone and displays the correct local time. The widget currently requires Adobe Flash Player, but an HTML5 version is in development to support more mobile devices.
The widget is part of NIST’s role as the official U.S. civilian timekeeper, contributing to the global time standard, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Future updates will include smaller versions in different formats. NIST’s research into accurate timekeeping, like the NIST F-1 Cesium Fountain clock, continues to push the boundaries of precision, with the ability to measure time accurately for over 100 million years.
