NIST is working to rebuild the U.S. semiconductor manufacturing base, which has declined significantly over the past few decades. The CHIPS and Science Act has provided over $39 billion in incentives to boost domestic semiconductor production and support research and development. NIST is also investing in advanced packaging technologies and building new facilities to support innovation in the semiconductor industry.
In addition to semiconductors, NIST is advancing quantum research, which has led to breakthroughs in precision measurement, navigation, and communication. NIST has developed highly accurate optical atomic clocks and is exploring quantum technologies that could transform industries. The Quantum Economic Development Consortium (QED-C) brings together over 250 organizations to support the growth of the quantum industry. NIST is also helping establish a Quantum Commons in Boulder, Colorado, to provide resources and infrastructure for quantum companies. These efforts aim to ensure the U.S. remains a global leader in emerging technologies like quantum computing and artificial intelligence.
