Two NIST researchers, Gretchen K. Campbell and Ron Ross, have been named finalists for the 2015 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals, which honor outstanding federal employees. Campbell, a physicist, was recognized for her work in atomtronics, a field that uses ultra-cold atoms to create new types of electronic devices. Ross, a NIST Fellow, was nominated for developing a risk assessment system that helps protect federal computer networks from cyber threats.
The finalists were selected from over 500 nominations across the federal government, with the winners to be announced in October 2015. The awards are given by the Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C. The recognition highlights the important contributions of federal employees in science, technology, and national security.
