NIST has selected HQC as a new standard in its Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) Standardization Process. This decision comes after a detailed evaluation in the Fourth Round, where HQC was chosen over BIKE and other candidates like Classic McEliece. The process, which began in 2016, is now moving toward finalizing standards that will protect digital communications from future quantum computer attacks.
NIST plans to draft a standard for HQC and open it up for public comment. After review and approval, the final standard is expected to be published in about two years. HQC will join ML-KEM as a key-encapsulation mechanism (KEM), helping secure data in a post-quantum world. This development supports ongoing efforts to update cryptographic standards and ensure long-term security for digital systems.
