Recommendations for Key-Encapsulation Mechanisms | Draft SP 800-227 is Available for Comment | NIST

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released a public draft of Special Publication 800-227, which offers guidance on Key-Encapsulation Mechanisms (KEMs). These are specialized cryptographic tools designed to protect data from future quantum computers. This document acts as a companion to NIST’s recently finalized FIPS 203 standard, which selected a primary algorithm for this purpose, and NIST intends to choose additional quantum-resistant options soon.

The draft is currently open for public review, with a comment deadline set for March 7, 2025, and a feedback workshop scheduled for late February. Once finalized, these standards will help organizations update their security systems to ensure sensitive information remains safe against the advanced processing power of quantum technology.
