Post-quantum cryptography | NIST

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has officially released three new standards designed to protect digital information from future quantum computers. These Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) algorithms are part of Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) and are ready for immediate use. Developed over an eight-year effort, they provide specific instructions for secure encryption and digital signatures to ensure systems can communicate safely without relying on vulnerable older methods.

Organizations are encouraged to begin updating their cybersecurity systems now to replace existing encryption, a process that is mandatory for federal agencies but widely adopted globally. These standards are being integrated into core internet protocols to ensure commercial products remain secure as quantum technology advances. This migration aims to maintain consistent security and interoperability across the modern digital ecosystem.
