Finland’s 6G playbook

Finland’s 6G roadmap, published by the national R&D network 6G Finland, outlines a strategic plan from 2025 to 2028 to transition 6G technology from experimental research to commercial deployment through coordinated industry pilots and policy alignment. The strategy prioritizes three technical shifts: AI-native self-managing networks, edge-first computing for lower latency, and intelligent spectrum sharing to utilize new sub-terahertz bands. Supported by approximately one billion euros in national investment and collaborations like the VINES program with the US, the plan aims to establish Finland as a global leader in sustainable, secure, and resilient wireless infrastructure. Success depends on translating research into real-world applications in sectors like manufacturing and defense while addressing the critical need for a skilled STEM workforce to maintain long-term technological sovereignty.
