Mariella Särestöniemi recognised for advancing multidisciplinary digital healthcare research

Adjunct Professor Mariella Särestöniemi from the University of Oulu received the Best Paper Award at ISMICT 2025 for her novel method of using radio channel analysis in capsule endoscopy to detect intestinal tumors invisible to optical cameras. Her research addresses the global healthcare polycrisis by developing portable, affordable devices for early diagnosis and monitoring in remote or disrupted environments through multidisciplinary collaboration. Central to her work is the 6GESS project, which aims to enable decentralized care using smart medical devices connected via secure wireless networks and supported by artificial intelligence. This approach integrates realistic digital and physical human body models to refine technologies such as wearable breast health monitors and portable skull fracture scanners.
