Japan’s 6G Forum Announces New Leadership Structure

Japan’s XG Mobile Promotion Forum (XGMF) has officially launched as a unified entity to advance 6G innovation and accelerate 5G deployment, succeeding the previous 5G and Beyond 5G consortia. Professor Akihiro Nakao of the University of Tokyo has been appointed as Co-Chair to lead the new organization, while Professor Matti Latva-aho of the University of Oulu joins as a Special Advisor alongside NICT President Hideyuki Tokuda. The forum will prioritize key technical areas including millimeter-wave technology, Non-Terrestrial Networks, and high-frequency applications through a dedicated Project Management Office. By consolidating industry efforts and expanding membership categories, XGMF aims to foster international collaboration and drive the next generation of mobile communication services.
