A research demonstration developed at the University of Oulu’s 6G Flagship received the Joint Best Demo Paper Award at the 6th IEEE International Symposium on Joint Communications & Sensing (JC&S) 2026 for its D-band integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. The prototype successfully achieved simultaneous data transmission and radio tomography imaging using a single continuous sub-THz link, eliminating the need for active mechanical or electrical scanning. Conducted remotely from Oulu, the experiment validated a robust, fixed line-of-sight architecture that supports spectrum-efficient dual-functionality critical for future 6G networks. The jury highlighted the system’s technical maturity and practical clarity, noting its potential to advance high-frequency sensing applications beyond traditional parallel or sequential approaches.
