Finland leverages 6G prowess as national defence network goes nationwide

Finland has expanded its DEFINE network into a nationwide dual-use framework that integrates Oulu’s 6G wireless expertise with Riihimäki’s data and AI capabilities to support national defense and NATO collaboration. The initiative leverages the University of Oulu’s 6G Test Centre, a key node within the NATO Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA), to provide rare radio-frequency measurement equipment for validating emerging technologies against military standards. This ecosystem aims to accelerate lab-to-market pathways for Finnish SMEs, creating a unified innovation platform that bridges civilian research with the tactical needs of the Defence Forces and international allies. By combining regional specializations, the project seeks to stimulate high-value exports and secure a competitive advantage in secure communications infrastructure.
