NATO’s DIANA Board has approved Finland’s proposal to establish a new 6G test centre in Oulu, managed by the University of Oulu and the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT), to support dual-use technology development for defence and civil sectors. The facility will feature advanced radio frequency measurement capabilities up to 330 GHz, including large anechoic chambers and sensor stations, to test 6G antennas, radios, and integrated circuits. Complementing this, a business accelerator will be set up in Espoo to assist start-ups and SMEs in developing quantum and secure communication solutions for the defence industry. These initiatives aim to integrate artificial intelligence into distributed 6G networks and facilitate the transition from 5G infrastructure to future dual-use applications like autonomous mobility.
