ETSI has released technical specification TS 102 855 to define how Broadband Satellite Multimedia networks can integrate with Next Generation Network architectures, enabling seamless convergence with terrestrial systems. The document leverages the ETSI TISPAN NGN Release 2 functional architecture, specifically utilizing the IP Multimedia Subsystem to decouple services from transport functions and support independent evolution. A key focus of the specification is addressing the unique constraints of satellite links to ensure end-to-end Quality of Service guarantees across heterogeneous networks. The work outlines a migration path from current satellite deployments to fully converged systems managed by a common control plane and subscriber management infrastructure. This standard was developed by the TC SES Working Group on Broadband Satellite Multimedia with funding from the European Commission and EFTA.
