Making mobile networks more energy efficient – ETSI

ETSI has published the second edition of technical specification TS 102 706 to standardize energy efficiency measurements for wireless access network equipment across GSM, W-CDMA, LTE, and WiMAX technologies. This updated version expands upon the initial static load analysis by incorporating dynamic equipment behavior and realistic traffic levels to better reflect operational conditions. The specification defines two key indicators that evaluate efficiency based on throughput per unit of energy consumed and coverage area per unit of energy consumed. These standardized metrics enable mobile network operators to objectively assess and compare the performance of radio equipment from different vendors. Future revisions of the specification aim to include additional radio characteristics such as fast fading to further refine the measurement of dynamic energy consumption.
