European Parliament makes eCall mandatory from 2018 – ETSI

ETSI and 3GPP have established standards for the eCall system, an in-vehicle safety feature that automatically dials the pan-European 112 emergency number upon detecting a severe accident or via manual activation. The system transmits a 140-byte Minimum Set of Data containing the vehicle’s precise location, direction of travel, and identification number to enable faster emergency response, which studies suggest can reduce response times by up to 60% in urban areas. While the in-band modem and data protocols are defined by 3GPP and CEN, ongoing work focuses on adapting these specifications for LTE/4G networks and integrating positional data from smartphones. These standardized measures aim to improve interoperability among manufacturers and ensure that emergency services receive critical information even if voice communication is impossible.
