Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) addresses growing network congestion and latency challenges by bringing computing resources closer to the end user, offering low latency, high bandwidth, and real-time radio network insights. The ETSI Industry Specification Group on MEC is developing a standardized, open framework to enable seamless third-party application integration across multi-vendor platforms, with initial work focusing on terminology, use cases, and reference architecture. A Proof of Concept framework specification, GS MEC-IEG 005, has been released to validate these specifications and demonstrate feasibility for applications like connected vehicles, e-Health, and augmented reality. This initiative aims to stimulate innovation and improve the mobile broadband experience for consumers and enterprises alike.
