ETSI Special Committee EMTEL has released report TR 103 582 to define standardization requirements for Internet of Things (IoT) devices in emergency situations, expanding beyond traditional connectivity to include automated emergency response. The document analyzes eight use cases, such as smoke detectors transmitting real-time video or IoT systems automatically shutting off gas supplies during earthquakes, to illustrate how autonomous devices can enhance safety. By identifying potential failure points and assessing impacts on existing specifications, the report provides recommendations to ensure fail-safe operation and objective data sharing in hazardous environments. These guidelines aim to support the development of globally applicable standards that leverage IoT capabilities for faster, human-independent emergency communications.
