The National Science Foundation launched the Materials Innovation Platforms (MIPs) program in 2016 to create shared research facilities that support the development of new materials. These platforms combine advanced tools for materials synthesis, characterization, and modeling, making cutting-edge research accessible to scientists across the country. Two sets of MIPs were established in 2016 and 2020, each focusing on different areas such as crystal growth, materials-biology convergence, and the creation of non-petrochemical-based polymers.
A key feature of MIPs is their emphasis on knowledge sharing. Researchers have access to shared tools, data, samples, and expertise, which helps accelerate scientific discovery and training. This collaborative approach fosters innovation and ensures that the entire research community can benefit from and build upon new developments. The MIP program represents a new way of conducting research and training, aimed at speeding up the discovery and application of new materials.
