The Fiber Sources and Applications Group at NIST is developing advanced optical frequency comb technologies for various precision measurement applications. These laser-based tools provide high spectral coverage and coherence, enabling precise optical measurements.
The group’s recent work includes creating a portable frequency comb, synchronizing distant clocks with femtosecond timing, and applying dual-comb spectroscopy for open-path atmospheric gas detection. They have demonstrated the technology’s potential in chemical analysis, atmospheric sensing, optical time transfer, absolute ranging, and surface profiling.
The development of these robust, fieldable frequency comb technologies could enable new capabilities in metrology, sensing, and networking of next-generation optical atomic clocks.
