The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) awarded Dr. Scott Papp the 2024 Samuel Wesley Stratton Award for his work in developing microresonator frequency combs. This technology, often called “microcombs,” creates portable lasers that generate signals at precise intervals, helping to establish new standards for integrated photonic technologies. The recognition highlights his leadership in engineering these devices to be more reliable and accessible for scientific use.
This work is currently being rapidly adopted, with no long implementation delay required for its initial use. The technology has significant potential for quantum sensing and optical atomic clocks, improving how we measure time and signals with extreme precision. By setting new benchmarks for these photonic systems, Dr. Papp’s research supports the development of more stable and portable quantum measurement tools.
