The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is currently working to improve security for small businesses, while also preparing for future challenges posed by quantum computing. Most of their existing work involves creating standards and guidelines to help organizations configure hardware and software securely, but they are also researching how quantum information theory could eventually break current encryption systems. This research is aimed at developing ultra-secure network technologies that can withstand new types of computational attacks.
NIST plans to advance these efforts through new standards, test suites, and budget support for the 2007 fiscal year. The agency aims to help businesses protect sensitive data by improving authentication methods and vulnerability management. Although specific quantum standards are still in the research phase, the work is intended to build a foundation that will allow for more advanced security measures as quantum technology becomes a reality.
