The 6G Flagship’s Smart Energy Grids team is developing a sustainable 5G/6G solution powered by renewable energy sources to support grids with near 100% renewable penetration. This architecture integrates communication, computing, and automation to enable peer-to-peer flexibility management, demand response, and local energy trading among prosumers. By leveraging edge computing, cloud functionalities, and accurate weather forecasting, the system optimizes the usage of distributed micro-generation and storage to balance volatile renewable inputs. The proposed hierarchical design scales from household levels to transmission grids, offering a resilient pathway to gradually integrate large amounts of microgeneration into a carbon-positive power system.
