NIST is leading a multi-laboratory effort to develop new testing protocols for tiny mechanical components, known as MEMS, that are critical for quantum computing and advanced electronics. This work is being developed by NIST in partnership with the U.S. Army and HT Micro Analytical Inc. to establish how micro-scale materials behave under stress. While no formal industry standard exists yet, these new methods provide the foundational data engineers need to ensure the reliability of smaller, more complex devices.
A key goal is verifying that MEMS switches can function properly at the extremely cold temperatures required for superconducting quantum circuits. Current commercial switches lack performance data for these cryogenic conditions, which is essential for high-speed telecommunications and quantum hardware. By creating specialized instruments to test these components at freezing temperatures, NIST hopes to improve the stability of quantum computers and other high-tech applications like space satellites and defense systems.
