Marko E. Leinonen, Giuseppe Destino, Olli Kursu, Marko Sonkki, and Aarno Pärssinen received the ETRI Journal 2019 Best Paper Award for their work on a 28 GHz wireless backhaul transceiver designed for 5G mobile communications. The researchers developed a transmitter-receiver equipped with antenna arrays capable of meeting high-speed requirements in the 27.5–28.5 GHz band, which is endorsed by major global spectrum authorities and utilized in Korean Winter Olympics trials. Their implementation represents one of the first complete solutions to achieve millimeter wave urban backhaul specifications, validating the design through rigorous characterization and radio link budget analysis.
