The University of Oulu has acquired a Toyota self-driving vehicle to serve as a research instrument for its 6G Flagship programme, enabling testing of decentralized software architectures and open-source platforms. Dean Jukka Riekki notes the car will connect to the university’s 5G test network to facilitate studies on vehicle-to-vehicle communication and real-world experimentation across twelve research units. Key research areas include integrating solar cell surfaces for energy and data transmission, as well as investigating human-machine interaction, ethical considerations, and sustainable autonomous driving solutions. This acquisition aims to create a collaborative space for industry partners and researchers to develop safe, functional, and efficient software environments for future mobility.
