CEN and ETSI deliver first set of standards for Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) – ETSI

New specifications for Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) are being developed by CEN and ETSI to enable connected cars to prevent accidents through real-time warnings about wrong-way driving, collisions, and roadworks. These standards, mandated by the European Commission under Mandate 453, establish common technical requirements for radio frequencies and messaging formats to ensure interoperability across the European automotive and infrastructure sectors. Work on Release 2 is currently underway, building on Release 1 specifications that have been tested in real-world conditions through EU-funded projects and international cooperation with ISO and IEEE. The deployment of these connected vehicles is expected to begin on European roads in 2015, with initial infrastructure implementation planned along the Rotterdam-Vienna route.
