European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani officially handed over mandate M/468 to CENELEC, ETSI, and CEN-CENELEC representatives to develop standards for electric vehicle chargers. The new standards aim to ensure safety, interoperability, and electromagnetic compatibility, allowing consumers to charge different vehicle brands with the same equipment across Europe. CEN and CENELEC have established a Joint Focus Group to assess European needs and align with international standards, targeting a report completion by March 31, 2011. Simultaneously, ETSI’s Intelligent Transport community is collaborating with the Car-To-Car Consortium to address the communications aspects required by the mandate. These efforts are designed to remove trade barriers and support the EU’s 2020 carbon emission reduction goals.
