ETSI announces first meeting of new standardization group on Mobile-edge Computing – ETSI

Mobile-edge Computing (MEC) integrates IT and cloud capabilities directly into the Radio Access Network at base stations or controllers, providing ultra-low latency and real-time access to radio network data like subscriber location. This architecture enables operators to open their RAN edge to authorized third parties, fostering a new ecosystem where developers can deploy context-aware applications that maintain high performance across varying network conditions. To support this, the ETSI Industry Specification Group is developing a standardized framework that includes reference architectures, platform services, APIs, and virtual machine service level agreements to ensure seamless multi-vendor integration. These efforts aim to accelerate the market scale of edge applications and improve economics by allowing efficient, flexible deployment of innovative services across multiple sectors.
