ETSI delivers Radio Access Networks energy efficiency measurement method – ETSI

ETSI has released ES 203 228, a new specification that establishes standardized measurement methods and metrics for evaluating the energy efficiency of live mobile radio access networks, including GSM, UMTS, and LTE systems. This document provides implementation guidelines and an extrapolation method to extend assessments to wider networks, addressing a sector-wide need confirmed through liaison with 3GPP, GSMA, and ITU-T. It serves as a common reference for testing infrastructure such as radio base stations and backhauling systems, complementing the earlier laboratory-focused standard ETSI ES 202 706. The specification also mandates the production of an assessment report as the required outcome of these measurements to ensure uniformity in evaluation.
