The ETSI Industry Specification Group on Next Generation Protocols (NGP ISG) has released its first specification, GS NGP 001, which defines key scenarios to evolve the current Internet Protocol architecture for future networks. This document addresses modern challenges such as 4K video, massive IoT, drone control, and virtual reality by outlining requirements for improved security, addressing, mobility, and energy efficiency across multi-access environments. The goal is to harmonize these requirements to influence major standards bodies like 3GPP and the IETF in shaping protocol evolution for 5G systems and 21st-century networking. The release also provides a comparative analysis of existing IP suite protocols against proposed next-generation internetworking architectures to guide future development.
