ETSI ISG ETI has released its first report, GR ETI 001, which outlines the challenges posed by pervasive encryption in 5G and future networks, specifically how end-to-end encryption hinders network operators from filtering malicious traffic and performing regulatory monitoring. The document highlights that while encryption protects user confidentiality, it simultaneously reduces the effectiveness of firewalls and cybersecurity systems in detecting and removing threats hidden within encrypted data flows. To address this, the group aims to develop a set of requirements by the end of 2021 that balance network operational needs with user assurance of confidentiality. This initiative seeks to enable the positive attributes of encryption while ensuring networks can continue to manage data and protect users from unseen attacks.
